Lightship
It's the Island Yacht Club birthday cake. Actually, it's the award for the first finisher overall in the Doublehanded Lightship, a representation of an old Lightship. The ships have been replaced by a buoy, nicknamed the 'Lightbucket'. ©2010 norcalsailing.com

Doublehanded Lightship Awards

April 7 , 2010

The first ocean race of the season, put on by Island YC, consisted of a turn around the Lightship, a buoy which replaced an actual ship that was on station to mark the approach to the main ship channel for San Francisco Bay, 8.6 nm west of the Point Bonita lighthouse. The last lightship was retired from duty in 1971 (and transferred to the U.S. Navy for duty in Vietnam).

The winner of the trophy above must finish first on corrected time over all other competitors. This year's winner, Phil Krasner, sailing with crew Steve McCarthy, also finished first in the Express 27 division with his Wetsu.

The awards for the race were handed out at the skippers meeting for the SSS Corinthian on Wednesday night at Oakland YC. (More on that race in an upcoming story.) Go here for our coverage of the Doublehanded Lightship.

The Doublehanded Lightship race is a charity regatta benefiting United Cerebral Palsy. Island YC donated $500 to them this year. For complete results of the race, see www.iyc.org/racing.html.
