OYRA Farallones

Depending on who you talked to, the OYRA Full Crew Farallones Race on Saturday either had too much wind or not enough. Entries dropped out because of too much wind, losing wind the altogether, or too much wave action. Jennifer McKenna crewed on one that finished, Max Crittenden's Martin 32 Solar Wind, and reports, "It was rough going out - we had a reef in, but then it calmed down and flattened out. We shook out the reef and had a nice sail around the islands. It picked up when we got back to the Bay, and we had an exciting finish!" Results are available at www.yra.org/OYRA/oyra_race_results.html.

The Rescue and Recovery of Jazz

Michele Logan crewed on the Martin 243 Jazz, which capsized in the Delta Ditch Run on June 4. She wrote to Bren Meyer, crew of the Wyliecat 30 Uno, to thank them for stopping their race to assist the distressed boat. "On behalf of Jazz, I extend our gratitude to Steve Wonner, you and the crew aboard Uno for our rescue late Saturday afternoon during the Ditch Run. Your fine seamanship skills delivered us quickly and safely out of the water and onto our sister ship Coyote (Wylie 34) for the rest of the recovery journey to Bethel Island. We've dubbed it the 'Wylie Wecovery'.

"Coyote tenderly towed the swamped Jazz to the tule reeds across from Antioch, where we bailed the water from below, secured sails, etc., and managed to restore her to stable towing conditions for the tow to Bethel Island. On Monday owner Graham Glasham set out to trailer her back home to Vancouver."

Michele told us that, "All four crew members (ranging in age from sixteen to sixty-something) recovered without incident."
