Rolex Big Boat Series Continues September 9, 2011 Day 2 of the 2011 Rolex Big Boat Series is underway. Who will break the three-way tie for points in the J/120 division, one of the most competitive on the Bay? The mini-slideshow below is in QuickTime. If you don't have it, you can download it for free here.
Out of six protests yesterday, only two were in the J/105 fleet. All the protests were withdrawn, except one. In contact between the Express 37s Stewball and Bullet (a spinnaker touch), Stewball accepted a 30% scoring penalty. The two boats are tied for fourth place in their division. the only other protest was resolved before racing began. Dee Smith of the new Farr 400 Team Premier requested the reclassification of the R/P 45 Criminal Mischief from IRC C to IRC A. That request was granted.
Two ambulances greeted the race boats as they returned to the docks yesterday. One came to collect an injured sailor who had broken bone on a TP52. The other, much more serious, came not for an injury but for an aneurysm suffered by a European crewman aboard the Elan 40 Tupelo Honey. We wish him well.
Timothy Ballard and crew of the Beneteau First 40.7 Inspired Environments, in third place in IRC D after the first two races, will be heading over to Hong Kong at the end of October for the China Cup, one of only two U.S. teams (the other is from Chicago) sailing in a regatta that has been described as China's equivalent of the America's Cup. The IE team will compete in the 40.7 division in a chartered boat.
