Berkeley YC Champion of Champions

February 27, 2012

Sunday, February 26, was the final chapter of the Berkeley YC 2011-12 Midwinter races. On this fine sunny day, all the winners got to go racing one more time. The first goal was to determine the Champion of the Champions.  The second goal was to reward all the winners with one more day of racing on the Bay.

The first place winners of each division in both Saturday and Sunday’s series were pitted together in the Red Division. At 1230, after a mere 30-minute postponement to allow for the westerly to fill in, 11 boats with a PHRF spread of 225 seconds per mile mile started together to go on an 8-mile windward/leeward course in 11-16 knots of wind. When the fat lady had finished singing, and as a tribute to the Northern California PHRF committee, the correct finish times covered a mere 14 minutes apart and, the second through sixth places were only 50 seconds apart!

Bob Harford and his Express 37 Stewball was the overall winner, and his name will now be added to the Kirt Brooks trophy. In the Blue Division, the collection of all the second place winners, Dan Pruzan’s Express 27 Wile E Coyote prevailed, and in the White division, Phil Krasner’s Express 27 Wetsu won. Full results are posted at www.berkeleyyc.org.
