NorCal Sailors Do the Cabo Crawl

April 1, 2013

The 2013 edition of the Newport Harbor Yacht Club's Newport to Cabo Race came to a close on Thursday with all the boats finishing in light winds just off of Cabo Falso. Four Bay Area boats were part of the 30-boat fleet that started and raced in fleets ORR-1, ORR-2 and PHRF.

In ORR-1 Tom Ekins' blue Reichel/Pugh 52 Meanie from San Francisco YC came in third after battling a very tough division in variable winds. Frank Slootman's new-to-him R/P 63 Invisible Hand (ex-Limit) from Enicinal YC finished sixth in the eight-boat ORR-1 division. In ORR-2, the one NorCal, boat Chip Megeath's R/P 45 Criminal Mischief from Corinthian YC finish fifth out of the eight boats racing. And Matt Brooks' old and venerable but new to the West Coast Dorade came in first place in the five-boat PHRF division, sailing for St. Francis YC. Northern California sailors Scott Easom and Dan Morris, who works for Scott at Easom Rigging and Racing in Pt. Richmond, crewed aboard Roy P. Disney's overall race winner Andrews 70 Pyewacket, which sailed in ORR-2. Pyewacket had the fastest corrected time, 92 hours, 45 minutes, 6 seconds.

The average speed for the course this year wasn't very impressive as even the fastest boats only logged in little over 7 knots speed over course. "It was a cruiser's wet dream kind of conditions. Flat and mellow." remarked one crewmember. Winds were so light the race deadline had to be extended. See nhyccaborace.com.

Like the other NorCal boats, Dorade is already looking ahead for the next race – that being the 2013 Transpac from L.A. to Honolulu. Let's hope for fair winds and a little more pressure than in this race.

Thanks to Stephen Buckingham for sending us the fabulous photos!
