Farewell to Caleb Whitbeck

August 14, 2014

A renowned maritime artist and sailor based in Novato, Caleb Whitbeck passed away over the weekend. According to the Master Mariners Benevolent Association, "Our members have been privileged to have his wonderful artwork on our clothing since the 1980s, and our custom tide books displayed many of his paintings in recent years. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Caleb's family and his many friends."

Whitbeck attended UC Davis, served in the Korean War, and studied then taught at Academy of Art University in San Francisco. According to his website, his passion was to be near the water. He moved to be near it, to sail on it, and to paint it. "There are a lot of things easier to paint," he said, "but the sea and ships have a majesty and a beauty all their own. I love it, so I paint it and I'm part of it."

"There will be an Eight Bells memorial service for Caleb at the St. Francis Yacht Club," says the MMBA. "As soon as the date and details have been set we will notify our members. It will include an on-the-water portion, so MMBA vessels will be encouraged to participate."
